Measure the narrowest point

A shelf can be wider at its opening than at its back. Hinges, doors and the front edge can reduce the useful area. Record width, depth and overhead clearance before comparing the file box with the two-drawer case.

Try the motion from the position you will actually use. If you usually reach for stationery while seated, a box that fits only when lifted above the shelf may be inconvenient. Neither external dimensions nor advertised capacity tell you how easily you can retrieve an item.

Assign one job to each box

Choose a category such as cables, notebooks or everyday accessories before buying. A tall open box and a drawer solve different access problems; filling either with unrelated items makes it harder to return things consistently.

The MUJI file box is approximately 10 × 32 × 24 cm. This describes its outside size, not the space available for every object. Check the usable interior and avoid treating a storage box as a food-contact container.

Start with one position

A single shelf is a useful place to try your layout before expanding it. Leave room to take the box out and to clean around it. Matching containers can look tidy while still creating extra work if their opening direction does not fit the location.
